Artist Statement
Kathleen is a Pennsylvania native who has spent a lifetime experimenting with artistic methods to refine and develop her approach to fine art. Her inspiration is taken from local people, places and things unique to the beauty of Pennsylvania. Recently, Kathleen has focused on the 5th century BC painting process of Encaustic Wax combined with oil, watercolor and soft pastel to create paintings illustrating abstraction in nature. When working in encaustic she builds transparent and opaque layers, scraping and incising layers of color to reveal the rich textural and smooth surfaces of the medium. By using a blow torch to fuse layers it also incorporates the element of movement to the work. Kathleen holds a Bachelor of Science in Art Education with a focus on Medical Illustration/Photography from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Master's Education Leadership from Saint Francis University, Loretto PA and Associates Degree of Interior Design from The Art Institute of Pittsburgh. She has been a designer, illustrator and teacher who brings a unique perspective and passion to creating art.
